Potty training...

01 January 2024

Potty training or toilet training, is an important stage in every child's life. It can be a stressful time for parents, but with a little patience and strategy, it can be a positive experience for everyone.

It is important to respect the child's rhythm and not try to force them to use the toilet before they are ready. Generally, children are ready for potty training between 18 months and 3 years, although some may be ready earlier or later.

To know if your child is ready, here are some signs to look out for:

He is aware of his needs and can tell when he has to pee or poop

He can dress and undress himself

Understands simple instructions and can follow instructions

He is curious about toileting and associated objects

Here are some tips to help your child with toileting:

Have him try the toilet while he is peeing or pooping, so he understands how it works

Give him rewards for each time he uses the toilet, like stickers or small toys

Make the toilet accessible and attractive to the child, by putting books on it or decorating the door with drawings

Encourage the child to wash their hands after each use of the toilet

Be careful what you eat and drink, as some foods can cause loose stools or leakage

It is also important to remember that every child is different and there may be ups and downs during the potty training process. If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to talk to your paediatrician or GP.

In summary, potty training can be a difficult stage, but by being patient and respecting your child's pace, you can help him or her succeed in this important developmental stage.

Don't forget to give your child plenty of encouragement!
